“You are no longer a judge,” Justice Aikawa tells Rita Ofili.
Justice Rilwan Aikawa of the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, on Friday, confirmed the dismissal of the embattled Justice Rita Ofili during her trial for money laundering and corruption.
The presiding judge made it known that President Muhammadu Buhari, through the Nigerian Judicial Council in a letter, sacked Justice Ofili last year.
Justice Aikawa is reacting to Justice Rita’s claim that she is still the judge of the Federal High Court, adding that the president is yet to approve her dismissal.
Delivering his judgement, Justice Aikawa ruled that the defendant is no longer a judicial officer, noting that she can be tried in a court for any misconduct.
He added that the letter from the president to the Chief Justice of Nigeria since last year was a testament that she has been relieved of her job.
Justice Ofili is facing a trial along with Godwin Obla over money laundering and conspiracy charges initiated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
