Madonna University Students Freed After Being Detained For 4 Months

Margaret Solace

Six students and one lecturer of Madonna University, who have been locked up for months in prison custody, have been freed.

The students were granted bail by the Federal High Court in Awka, Anambra State, where they were arraigned on June 11, 2018.

Although they were granted bail on Wednesday, their freedom was secured today.

The students and lecturer were said to have been picked up between November 2018 and February 2019 by the police after a Madonna University petition alleging that they were cultists involved in the multiple kidnapping of the university's Vice Chancellor, Prof. Chuks Ezedum, was filed.

They were then arraigned on an eleven-count charge bordering on injurious publication against the school.

According to reports, the students include Opara Harmelson, Owhonda Badaziri, Abuno Jonathan, Chijioke Nnamani, Amaechi Benedict, Blackson Nwokeoma, and Tony Ezeimo.

Six of them have affiliations with Madonna University, while five of them are ex-students.

Reports suggest that Tony Ezeimo is a former lecturer at the university. But Opara Harmelson is just a friend of Ezeimo. Harmelson was the only one charged with advance fee fraud.

Prior to the latest bail and release, the men were in February granted bail but they could not meet the bail conditions.
