Pipeline Explosion: Many Feared Dead As Fire Guts Ijegun Area Of Lagos

Many people are feared dead following a pipeline explosion at Ijegun, Igando-Ikotun Local Council Development Area of Lagos State.

The explosion, which was said to have been caused by hoodlums in the area who vandalized pipelines belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, resulted in a huge fire outbreak.

Although the details of the unfortunate incident, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning, are not fully known. Reports are that some bunkers were caught up in the explosion after scooping from a vandalized pipeline.

The number of casualties and worth of destroyed properties could not be ascertained as at the time of this report, as the flames prevented people from gaining access to the area.

An eye witness, Babajide Lawal, said it was the noise from the explosion that woke the residents.

“There is a fire incident at Ijegun last bus stop. In fact, no one can move near the place because the whole area is burning. What woke us up was the sound of the explosion and when we came out to observe what happened, we saw the fire burning everywhere," Lawal said.

Firefighters from both the National Emergency Management Agency and the Lagos State Fire Service are currently at the scene of the incident to put out the fire.
