Margaret Solace

The Federal Government has said it is planning to launch a campaign against open defecation in the country.

Mrs Chizorma Opara, the acting coordinator, “Clean Nigeria-Use the Toilet” campaign, who disclosed this, said the objective of the campaign is to end open defecation in the country by 2025.

Opara said, while the country ranks second in the world and the highest in population in Africa practicing open defecation, there are about 47 million people defecating in the open.

She noted that the president has declared a state of emergency in the sector in 2018 "with emphasis that Nigeria must end open defecation by 2025."

“Now Nigeria has already developed a road map in 2016 that was launched by the then Minister of Water Resources, Mr Suleiman Adamu."

“The road map is a strategy document to help the country to end open defecation in Nigeria by 2025," Opara said.

She disclosed that the initiative has given itself the task to achieve this goal by the stipulated year.

“This will actually keep everyone working together to see if we would all collectively achieve that,’’ she said.

The acting coordinator of the initiative was speaking at the two-day workshop which was organised by the Federal Ministry of Water Resources in Kebbi, Nasarrawa State.

The training was for the Revised Open Defecation Free (ODF) Protocol and Validation for National Taskforce Group Sanitation (NTGS) members.
