A Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ile-Ife, Osun State, on Thursday sentenced one Ayoola Sunday to six months in prison with hard labour for contempt of court.
Olukunle Owolawi, who presided over the case, ruled that the 29-year-old man disobeyed an order of the court. According to the law, contempt of court is any activity or action that disrespects the authority of the court and brings the court or judge into disrepute.
Sunday's prosecutor, Inspector Sunday Osanyintuyi, told the court that the accused committed the offence on June 26, 2019.
However, the Magistrate gave Sunday an option of twenty thousand naira fine.
Although the accused pleaded guilty to the charge, he urged the court to temper justice with mercy. The Magistrate, however, opted for his conviction.
The Magistrate noted that the need to ensure that the rule of law was maintained in the county and also in the court necessitated the conviction.
Magistrate Owolawi, during his ruling, said Sunday must not go unpunished, adding that the sentence would serve as a deterrent to other offenders.
