Super Eagles coach Gernot insists there's no shame in losing to Algeria, the team he has crowned as the best team at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations.

Nigeria were defeated 2-1 by Algeria in the semi-finals on Sunday as their chase for a 4th continental title was thwarted.

Odion Ighalo converted from the spot in the second half to cancel our Troost-Ekong's own goal but Riyad Mahrez won it for the Foxes with the last meaningful kick of the game to send his country into their first final in 29 years.

And now Nigeria will have to battle for the bronze medal with Tunisia on Wednesday as the players and coaching crew seeks to redeem themselves.

Speaking ahead of the third-place match on Tuesday, the former Gabon head coach reflected on his team’s defeat to Djamel Belmadi’s side.

“After our loss to Algeria, we were a bit disappointed because it’s disappointing when you lose a game in the last seconds,” the German told the media.

“We’ve analyzed the match, we saw the video with the players yesterday and we saw also it was a good match and we gave a good fight.

“The statistics were even better for us because we had 11 shots on goal, they had only six.

“We had better possession of the ball against probably the best team so far in the tournament.

“So losing to them is not a shame and we have to be positive as we want to finish this competition well together.”

Nigeria have history backing them for their next game, the West Africans have never lost a third-placed place game, winning all six in regulation time with four clean sheets those encounters.
