Kano Pillars defeated Niger Tornadoes 4-3 on penalties to lift the 2019 Federations Cup at the Ahmadu Bellow Stadium, Kaduna on Sunday.

Both sides had failed to find the back of the net in regulation time before Pillars won their first Cup title in 66 years.

Runners up in the 2018 edition when they lost to Enugu Rangers in the finals, Sai Masu Gida made sure they took it a notch higher this time around, against their Northern rivals.

It was a cagey affair in the first 45 minutes of the game, with both sides showing respect for each other even though Pillars bossed possession.

But four minutes into the second half, the game almost spark into life when Pillars captain Rabiu Alli well-struck free-kick whisked a few inches off Tornadoes goal.

The Kano based said continued to be adventurous in their play but were denied by goalkeeper Mustapha Aliko who was in fine form and kept his side in the game.

With 18 minutes to the end of the game, Pillars almost got the winner. Substitute Yusuf Maigoro lobbying effort beat the goalkeeper but not the crossbar before it was cleared by the defense.

That proved to be the biggest goalscoring opportunity of the game before the referee signaled the end of proceedings, with Pillars going on to win the game 4-3 on penalties.
