President Buhari Suspends Okoi Obono-Obla  Over ICPC Report

Austin Papi

President Muhammadu Buhari has suspended the Chairman of the Special Presidential Investigation Panel on the Recovery of Public Property, Okoi Obono-Obla, following allegations of certificate forgery and other corruption-related charges.

Police officers from force headquarters had visited Obono-Obla's Asokoro office and sealed off the building just minutes after the office had closed for the day last week Friday. Close sources explain that it was a preemptive move to block the official from removing evidence.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, who signed Mr. Obono-Obla’s suspension letter directed the embattled official to step down and answer questions from the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

The suspension letter by Mr. Mustapha indicated that, while Mr. Obono-Obla faced a probe over allegations of certificate forgery and other corruption-related charges, the Solicitor General of the Federation, Dayo Apata, would take charge of the panel on recovery of public property. Other members of the panel will remain unchanged.

Reports suggest that the SGF office has since sent messages to Mr. Obono-Obla to pick up his suspension letter but he has not made an appearance and his office was closed on Wednesday.
