The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Catherine Anene, of Makurdi Police Command in Benue State announced on Sunday in a statement presented to newsmen in Makurdi that the death toll from Saturday’s gunmen attack on mourners in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of the state had risen to nine.
She added that the police were still investigating the real circumstances surrounding the unfortunate attack.
"The clash cut across three villages. There is no reason for these attacks. Several peace meetings with the communities have yielded no positive results,” Anene said.
Four persons were reportedly killed at the burial of Tor Gbev Amaafu in Tongov, an additional five persons were murdered during reprisal attacks by the angered community members ranging from Amaafu, Sati Agirigi and Ikurav Tiev communities.
According to eyewitness reports, there were 10 gunmen who appeared at the funeral and opened fire on the mourners, killing and injuring several persons. The attack occurred in the early hours of Saturday.
