10 Series You Can Binge-Watch With Bae This Weekend

The weekend is upon us and what better time is there to unwind with bae and play catch up with the numerous local and international movies/series available for streaming on Showmax?

Our list covers everything from award-winning sci-fi to docuseries, comedy and Nigerian series. Here are 10 series you can binge-watch with your loved one exclusively on Showmax this weekend.

1. Marvel's Runaways
Nothing like a little action from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to kick off our list. Set in Los Angeles, six teenagers suddenly realise their parents are super-villains and hiding dark secrets. They must now band together to stop them before it’s too late.

With just 2 seasons (and a 3rd on the way), Runaway has a 86% score on Rotten Tomatoes and was a 2019 Teen Choice nominee in the Drama categor

2. South Park

Rest easy animation lovers, there's something for you. South Park has been a fan favourite since it first hit television screens in 1997.

Following the adventures of Stan, Kyle, Kenny and Cartman, South Park is unapologetically politically incorrect and will more than likely leave you and bae in stitches. It has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 84% and IMDB score of 8.7/10.

3. Barry

Barry is not your average comedy. It tells the story of an assassin who decides to quit and become an actor after unwittingly stumbling into a Los Angeles acting class.

With an impressive 99% rating on Rotten Tomato and 8.3/10 on IMDB, Barry is a whole new brand of dark comedy. It’s up for 17 Emmys in September, including Best Comedy and Best Actor (Bill Hader).

4. Power

Set in New York City's drug underworld, Power centres around James 'Ghost' St Patrick, a night club owner by day and drug dealer by night, who fights many battles in his attempt to become a legitimate businessman and rekindle his relationship with his high school sweetheart.

Scoring 93% with Google users and 8.2/10 on IMDB, Power is action and drama-packed, not to mention its very steamy sex scenes.

5. True Detective

Get in here police procedural drama fans, this one's for you. True Detective is an anthology crime drama, which means there's a new set of characters and storylines in each season.

The first season takes place in Louisiana and follows a pair of Louisiana State Police homicide detectives, and their pursuit of a serial killer over a 17-year period.

The second season is set in California and focuses on three detectives from three cooperating police departments and a criminal-turned-businessman as they investigate a series of crimes they believe are linked to the murder of a corrupt politician.

The third season takes place in the Ozarks over three separate time periods, as two state police detectives investigate a macabre crime involving two missing children.

The HBO series has an IMDB score of 9/10. Season 3 is up for 9 Emmys in September, including Best Actor In A Limited Series (Mahershala Ali).

6. Leaving Neverland

Micheal Jackson is in the spotlight again but for all the wrong reasons in this 2-part docuseries, as accusers, James Safechuck and Wade Robson share their alleged encounter of sexual abuse at the hands of the legendary musician.

Leaving Neverland is up for 5 Emmys in September, including Best Documentary and Best Documentary Director (Dan Reed).


7. Siren

Get ready for a dive into the supernatural. The coastal town of Bristol Cove, known for its legend of once being home to mermaids, is turned upside down when a mysterious young woman appears and begins wreaking havoc upon the small fishing town.

She’s looking for her captured sister, who was abducted at the hands of the local military. Siren boasts a 97% score amongst Google users.

8. The Good Fight

A spinoff of The Good Wife, The Good Fight will tickle lovers of legal series as it centres around a black law firm in Chicago, which Diane Lockhart has made her new home after getting kicked out of her former firm following a financial scam. Binge Season 1 and 2 now; Season 3 is coming to Showmax in November 2019.

9. Battleground

If you're new to Nigerian drama series, Battleground is probably a good start. The series tells the story of a wealthy Nigerian family and the often questionable lengths its patriarch goes to hold on to power, wealth and even family. With a total of 260 episodes, you're in for a long binge.

10. Game of Thrones

What's a binge list without Game of Thrones, a television series that held the world spellbound? Game of Thrones follows the lives of competing families caught in a web of greed, lust, violence, and death in the fictional kingdom of Westeros.

Game of Thrones is rated 89% on Rotten Tomatoes and 9.4/10 on IMDB. The final season is up for 32 Emmys in September, including Best Drama, Best Actor (Kit Harington) and Best Actress (Emilia Clarke).
