Femi Falana To Buhari: Declare Stolen Funds Recovered Since 1999 Till Date

Jayfred Ugo

Popular human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), has implored the Federal Government to declare how much stolen funds it has recouped since 1999 for transparency sake.

While delivering the lecture, tagged: “The Danger of Unequal Criminal Justice System in Nigeria”, Falana announced that the Federal Government, through the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), had recovered over N1 trillion from looters through its whistle-blower policy since 1999 but kept Nigerians in the dark with the monetary details.

“The Federal Government has recovered huge sums of money from looters," he said.

Falana added that majority of Nigerians have no access to lawyers due to financial situations, while the rich are able to pay huge sums of money to lengthen trials, then end up buying favourable treatments from the police and military when detained.

He stated the case of Wadume, the Taraba kidnap kingpin that initially escaped from police custody with the assistance of military personnel. Falana also suggested that the arrested soldiers in the Wadume case should not be tried by the military but by the Attorney General of Taraba State.

Pastor Okonkwo of the popular TREM church has made a declaration to fight against the problem of illegal detention in the nation and Falana has vowed to help Okonkwo and members of TREM to ensure that the poor get this justice.

"I know your church has a number of lawyers and I will be prepared to partner with them to ensure justice is done and served,” Falana said.

The lawyer also suggested that the church could join the magistrate to inspect police stations and identify people in illegal detention on a monthly basis.
