Former Abia State Governor, Orji Uzor Kalu, on Monday lost his senatorial seat to the National and State House of Assembly Elections Petitions Tribunal sitting in Umuahia, the Abia State capital.

The court, after nullifying the election of Abia North Senatorial District, ordered for a fresh election in the affected areas within 90 days.

The three-man member panel, led by Justice I.P.C Igwe, while delivering the judgement yesterday, said that the petitioner, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, of the Peoples Democratic Party had successfully proved to a reasonable doubt with his allegations of the non-compliance with the electoral guidelines.

Ohuabunwa had approached the tribunal after INEC declared Kalu, the ruling party candidate, as the winner of the February 23 national assembly election.

Reacting to the ruling, Mike Onyeka, the counsel to Ohuabunwa, praised the judgement, noting that it had further solidified his confidence in the judiciary.

“I feel a little more confident in the judiciary because what has been decided is the justice of the matter,” he said.

Meanwhile, Orji Kalu, the Chief Whip of the Senate, is yet to speak on the ruling.
