President Muhammadu Buhari has confirmed the programme of activities to celebrate Nigeria’s 59th Independence.

The annual celebration, according to informed sources, is expected to be a low-key one.

Willie Bassey, the Director, Information, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, said the president approved the programme of activities on Wednesday.

According to Bassey, activities lined up for the occasion will commence on the 23rd of September with a Juma’at prayer at the National Mosque and an interdenominational Christian service at National Christian Center.

This will be followed by a National Youth Entrepreneurship Empowerment Summit and Youth Concert at International Conference Centre and National Park respectively.

As usual, President Buhari will address the nation through a media broadcast on the Independence Day.

With the arrangements in place, it is clear that the usual fanfare and merriment held in the past to mark the day at the Eagle's Square and Federal Secretariat, Abuja, have been cancelled by the president.
