Omoyele Sowore, the incarcerated publisher of Sahara Reporters and convener of #RevolutionNow protest, was charged with treason and accused of insulting President Muhammadu Buhari by the federal government on Friday, September 20, 2019.

The former presidential candidate of the February 2019 election was also charged with his alleged accomplice, Olawale Bakare.

Aminu Alilu, a Chief State Counsel in the Department of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, signed the charges on behalf of Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN).

The applications were filed a day before Sowore's 45 days detention permitted by Federal High Court to the Department of State Service expired.

Sowore was accused of several offences, including treason, money laundering, cybercrime, and a protest aimed at removing the president, among other issues.

Today, Saturday, September 21, marks 45 days of Sowore in detention after he was arrested in a hotel in Lagos.
