Argentine superstar, Lionel Messi has been crowned the FIFA The Best player of the year 2019 at the award ceremony in Milan.
The Barcelona forward nicked the award ahead of long-time rival, Cristiano Ronaldo and UEFA Player of the year, Virgil van Dijk.
Liverpool and Netherlands defender, van Dijk had been tipped by many to win the award having beaten both Ronaldo and Messi to the UEFA player of the year award.
But when FIFA president, Gianni Infantino opened the envelope that had the name of the winner, it was Messi's name that was announced.
Messi had finished the 2018/2019 season as the top scorer in European Leagues with 36 goals, he also found the back of the net 10 times in the Champions League.
The 32-year-old was also named in the Champions League team of the season and won the best forward award.
