The Sporting Director of the Serie A club believes their star forward should have won the Best Men's Player award at the Best FIFA Football Awards ahead of Lionel Messi.

Barcelona captain, Messi, was voted the best player in the world at the award ceremony, which held on Monday, but Fabio Paratici believes Cristiano Ronaldo deserved the honour.

Ronaldo finished third on the rankings with 36 points behind his long-time rival Messi (46) and Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk (38), voted for by captains and managers of international teams, as well as selected media representatives.

But the Old Ladies official believes the decision was the wrong one, insisting Ronaldo deserved to win the award based on the honours he had achieved in 2019.

"We were also disappointed over the award last night," Paratici was quoted to have said as per Corriere Dello Sport.

"While still respecting Messi, who is a great player, we think and thought that after last season, having won the Nations League, Serie A, and the Italian Super Cup, having played a great Champions League, he [Ronaldo] deserved this award."

Ronaldo had skipped the ceremony in Milan, probably in the knowledge that he wasn't going to win and took to his Instagram page to make a cryptic post, featuring an image of himself relaxing on the couch with a book.

He wrote: "Patience and persistence are two characteristics that differentiate the professional from the amateur.

"Everything that is big today has started small. You can't do everything, but do everything you can to make your dreams come true.

"And keep in mind that after night always comes dawn."

The Portuguese star missed Juve's game against Brescia which his side won 2-1 and it is unknown whether he will return against SPAL on Saturday.
