The Niger State Government has reportedly granted amnesty to 13 suspected armed bandits, apprehended along Kontonkoro axis in the Magama Local Government Area of the state, by security operatives.

The Governor of Niger State, Gov. Abubakar Bello, disclosed this while delivering a speech at the 2nd General Abdulsalami Abubakar Foundation, tagged "Annual Peace Lecture", on Saturday in the state capital, Minna.

He stated that the bandits, who were released based on dialogue, signed a peace deal, as well as other agreements presented by the government. The bandits from Minna were arraigned in August, but were released under the peace treaty implemented by the former President, late Umaru Ya'radua.

The governor added that the peace treaty reached with bandits has led to a gradual reduction in the activities of armed bandits and kidnappings in the area.

“After hearing them on why they decided to engage themselves in such activities, we had to go into a peace agreement with them in the interest of peace and for them to help us with useful information to tackle spate of insecurity in the state,” Gov. Abubakar said.
