The First Lady of Nigeria, Aisha Buhari, was unusually absent as Africa’s First Ladies protested early child marriage and sexual violence against women and girls before the UN General Assembly.
Some of the First Ladies involved in the movement included Jeanette Kagame (Rwanda), Clar Weah (Liberia), Antoinette Sassou Nguesso (Democratic Republic of Congo) and Auxilla Mnangagwa (Zimbabwe).
These women continued their passionate appeal to the world for the support of their “Hands Off Our Girls!" campaign.
According to the 'Girls Not Brides' movement, 44% of girls in Nigeria are married before their 18th birthday and 18% are married before the age of 15, mainly in the northern region of the country.
