Nigeria’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Sunday Dare, has approved the refund of N23m ($65000) owed by Nigeria to the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).

The new minister, who was appointed in August, is making sure Nigeria is paying back the complete sum after IAAF wrongly credited the account of the IAAF.

In 2017, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) was wrongly credited to the tune of N43m ($135000) by the world athletics body, IAAF.

A refund of the money initially proved difficult to get back for the IAAF but after much pressure, part of the money was paid by Nigeria under the former Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung.

But now, Mr Dare in tweets he shared on his official Twitter page has confirmed the approval of the refund of the remaining sum.

“IAAF- I have approved the release of funds to refund the IAAF overpayment wrongly credited to the Athletics Federation Nigeria,” Dare tweeted.

“In a few days from now the funds should hit the account of the IAAF barring any interbank delays. With this Nigeria’s reputation is regained.”

“Re: IAAF refund approval is for the outstanding balance of $65,000-sixty five thousand US dollars,” the minister of sports added.

“The first trench of the refund was made by the former Minister. I have only completed the refund because it is the right thing to do.”
