Arsenal coach, Unai Emery, says the club has told captain, Granit Xhaka, to apologise after he was involved in an angry confrontation with home fans during Sunday's 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace.

The midfielder was one of the major talking points from the game after he gestured to fans who booed him while he walked off the pitch at Emirates Stadium.

Xhaka was substituted in the 61st minute of the game, as Arsenal sought for a winner, having been pegged back by a Luka Milivojevic’s penalty and Andrew Ayew's strike leading to a 2-0 lead.

While the swiss international made his way to the touchline, he was booed by the Gunners fans, prompting him to cup his ear before storming into the tunnel.

He faced more criticism after the game, with many fans suggesting it was time for the 27-year-old to be sent out of the club.

And now manager, Unai Emery, confirmed that he told Xhaka to apologise.

"Yes [he should apologise]. We make mistakes, we need to apologise and we suggested for him to do that, " Emery said, according to the BBC.

"Really, he knows he was wrong and he feels inside very deep."

Sunday wasn't the first time Xhaka has been booed by his own fans this season, with Emery having to publicly defend the midfielder after a game against Aston Villa last month.

But that criticism didn't stop Emery from appointing Xhaka as club captain in September after the summer departure of Laurent Koscielny.

"At the moment I am not speaking and I don't want to think about that," the Spaniard said, as he refused to confirm whether Xhaka will remain captain.

"It is not easy for him and for the team. We spoke yesterday, and Sunday night also, and this morning.

"He trained normally with the group but he is devastated and sad about the situation."

Xhaka is not in Arsenal's squad for the clash against Liverpool on Wednesday but Emery suggested that is because he was always going to make changes for the game.
