Arsenal manager, Unai Emery, has stripped captain Granit Xhaka of his title, the club’s boss has confirmed.

The embattled midfielder has been relieved of his role as the team's captain after his row with the club’s fans, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has taken over.

Xhaka was involved in an ugly confrontation with fans last month at the Emirates Stadium in a Premier League game against Crystal Palace.

The 27-year-old reacted angrily to boos and criticism from his own fans after he was subbed off in the 2-2 draw on 27 October.

The Swiss international cupped his ear and told fans to "f*ck off" before taking off his shirt and walking straight down the tunnel to the dressing room.

The former Basel man was asked to apologise to the club's supporters by his manager who said the midfielder "knows he was wrong."

But Xhaka only released a statement explaining the situation that led to his burst up with the fans.

Now, having taken his time to analyse the situation and after having a discussion with the player, Emery has decided to relieve him of his post.

"I had a meeting with him and told him he is no longer in the captain's group," the Spaniard said on Tuesday.

"He accepted my decision. I needed to take a decision and now it's closed."

Striping Xhaka, who has not played a game for Arsenal since that incident of the captaincy, was always going to be the decision but it is yet unknown if it will soften the hearts of the fans.

The midfielder has once again been left out of Arsenal's squad for their Europa League game in Portugal against Vitoria Guimaraes on Wednesday.
