After the completion of their service year, corps members usually have a lot of insecurities, mostly born out of fear of not having a major source of income.

The current situation of unemployment among Nigerian graduates has made a large number of them roam the streets in search of jobs which sometimes leads them into serious social vices like kidnapping, armed robbery, prostitution etc.

There are also some mistakes graduates often make after NYSC, which they later regret. They start to wish they had done things the right way.

In this article, some of these mistakes are outlined so as to help you plan well and make smarter decisions for a brighter future.

1. Staying at home till you get a job

This is one of the major mistakes many graduates make. This is because they believe they can make legit money only by getting a job, which is not always the case. They have forgotten that one of the major reasons for unemployment in the country is that graduates lack the skills needed by employers of labour. Rather, they should stay busy by acquiring some relevant skills.

2. Desperation to make quick money

After NYSC, the love of making fast money sets in and it can be difficult for someone who reasons that way to be productive and useful. All they will have in their heads will be ‘Get-Rich-Quick’ schemes. This leads them to illegal money-making acts without considering the consequences. Most youths forget that they do not have to wait for employment from anyone. Rather, they can start their own business. There are a lot of businesses that can be started with low capital and gradually grown into something big.

3. Settling for any kind of job

Some graduates want to make money so desperately that they tend to forget their worth and value and decide to settle for any kind of job, which unfortunately is no job at all.

4. Getting married

Getting married immediately after NYSC is not the best thing to do. Some female graduates are usually eager to jump into marriage immediately after NYSC, because of the fear of not getting a job and also due to the popular belief that they do not have a problem since the man will cater for them. It will be wiser to gain your independence by getting a job or starting your business before getting married instead of trying to use marriage as a tool to attain financial security and independence.

5. Not planning to get a job at all

Some graduates depend on their parents’ wealth and believe they can never go hungry or penniless because their parents have a lot of money. With this type of mindset, someone that doesn't know what it takes to make money can never understand the true value of money.
