Maurice Iwu’s N1.23BN Fraud Trial Stalled Over Judge’s Absence

Funsho Akinwale

The N1.23 billion fraud trial of the former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Maurice Iwu, did not hold as scheduled on Monday after Justice Nicholas Oweibo failed to show up in court.

The former INEC boss is facing a three-count charge, bordering on fraud and money laundering.

Recall, he was earlier this year arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) before Justice Chuka Obiozor, who granted him N1 billion bail before the case was transferred to Justice Oweibo of the Lagos High Court.

The judge had adjourned the case on October 24 till yesterday when the trial was supposed to commence.

The new date was yet to be fixed as at yesterday until the judge returns from his international engagement.
