At least nine persons, including elderly people, women and teenagers, were confirmed dead in a recent raid by unknown armed men in Ayati community, Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State.

A close source revealed that the raid was conducted by nine men, who surrounded the community at around 12 noon that fateful day on motorbikes. They shot sporadically at the people of the community, killing their victims on the spot.

"People were just returning from church and preparing for lunch when the armed men who were about nine in number stormed the village on Bajaj motorbikes.

"They were shot sporadically and killed anybody who they caught up with. Some of the victims were elderly people who could not run, women and teenagers."

The police have swung into action, as they have begun an investigation into the senseless killings. Checkpoints have been set up in strategic locations around the community.

Reports suggest that Benue State Government would deploy military troops to the remote villages to curb the attacks on humans and livestock by these bandits.
