Atletico Madrid and Portuguese forward, Joao Felix, has won the 2019 Golden Boy award for the best under-21 player in Europe.

The 20-year-old won the price ahead of England and Borrusia Dortmund winger, Jadon Sancho, and Bayer Leverkusen as well as Germany youngster, Kai Havertz.

The former Benfica starlet has been one of the brightest youngsters of the game in 2019, scoring 18 goals for Portuguese champions before making a 126m euros (£113m) move to Atletico in the summer.

Felix was also part of the triumphant Portuguese team that won the inaugural UEFA Nations League on home soil in June.

Since his move to Spain, he has scored three goals in thirteen appearances for Atletico in all competitions this term.

"I am very proud," Felix said. "It is the second time that a player from Atletico Madrid has won this award and I am happy."

Jadon Sancho, 19, finished second with Kai Havertz, 20, coming a close third. Manchester United target, Erling Haaland of Red Bull Salzburg, came fourth.

The Golden Boy award was organised in 2003 by Italian newspaper, ‘Tuttosport’, to recognise the most promising U-21 footballers playing in Europe.
