EFCC Arrests Kirikiri Prison Head Who Aided $1M Scam Deals

The head of the Kirikiri Maximum Prison, Mr Emmanuel Oluwaniyi, who happens to be the Deputy Controller of the renowned prison alongside another top official of the Nigerian Correctional Services, Hemeson Edson Edwin, have both been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for abetting a convicted fraudster to transact several scam deals worth over $1 million from inside the prison.

According to the Spokesman of the EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, the two top officials were arrested on Monday for helping a convict, Hope Olusegun Aroke, who is serving a 24-year jail term, to escape from the Prisons and be lodged at the Police Hospital located in Lagos under the pretext of being ill. During this “sick leave," the inmate identified as Aroke, popularly known as H.Money masterminded numerous scam deals to the tune of over $1m, he was even allowed to attend social events in the town.

A statement on the case was made available to journalists on Tuesday. It stated that Emmanuel Oluwaniyi, who is the Controller at Kirikiri Maximum Prison, alongside Hemesen Edwin who was in charge of the medical facility, both gave the convict the referral letter that enabled him to get out of the prison as a patient in need of urgent medical attention at the Police Hospital when he was not sick in the first place.

Close sources to the EFCC has confirmed that the two men had already provided the EFCC with useful information as to their alleged involvement in the crime.
