Barcelona superstar, Lionel Messi, has been crowned the world's best player after winning the 2019 Ballon d'Or award.

The Argentine pipped Liverpool's defender, Virgil van Dijk, and long-time rival, Cristiano Ronaldo, to win for a record sixth time.

Messi, who scored 54 times for club and country in 2018-19, received the coveted prize at the Ballon d'Or ceremony which held in Paris.

Netherland's captain, Virgil van Dijk, came second, while Juventus star, Cristiano Ronaldo, who has won the award five times, and Sadio Mane are completing the top four.

Speaking after receiving his prize, the 32-year-old said: "Today is my sixth Ballon d'Or. It's a completely different moment, lived with my family and my children.

"As my wife said, you must never stop dreaming but always work to improve and continue to enjoy. I am very lucky, I am blessed.

"I hope to continue for a long time. I realise that I am very lucky, even if, one day, retirement will ring. It will be difficult.

"But I still have beautiful years ahead of me. Time goes very quickly, so I want to enjoy football and my family."

In the other categories of the award, USA World Cup-winning captain, Megan Rapinoe, claimed the women award while 20-year-old Juventus defender, De Ligt, won the Kopa trophy as the young best player.

Liverpool shot-stopper, Alisson Becker, won the inaugural Yashin Trophy for best goalkeeper, ahead of Barcelona's Germany international, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, and Brazilian compatriot, Ederson, of Manchester City.
