7 Natural Home Remedies For Dandruff

Dandruff is a common, chronic condition characterized by a flaky scalp. Mild dandruff can be treated by using regular, gentle and medicated shampoos. Here are a few common causes of dandruff:

1. Inadequate use of shampoo

When you don’t wash your hair regularly with a good shampoo, you are likely to have dandruff because there will be a build-up of oils and dead skin cells.

2. Malassezia

Malassezia is a yeast-like fungus that lives on our scalp. It can cause skin irritation.

3. Dry skin

Dry skin generally causes flakes and cracks in the skin.

Now that the causes are settled, we should talk about the remedies for dandruff.

1. Baking soda

Baking soda is commonly used as an antifungal agent. It contains antifungal properties and may help with dandruff. You will need 2-3 tablespoons of baking soda. Apply directly to wet hair, leave for two minutes and wash off. You can use at least two times a week.

2. Garlic

Garlic contains bioactive constituents named ajoene and allicin. Get a few cloves, wash and peel. You will need 1/2 cup of olive oil as well. Mash garlic and add heated olive oil, heat both for 5 minutes. Set it to cool and apply for 30-45 minutes before washing off. You can try it twice a week.

3. Aloe vera

This contains bioactive compounds as well as antifungal and antimicrobial properties that can help fight any fungal infection. Massage the scalp with the gel. Wash off after one hour. Use twice a week at least.

4. Onion juice

Onion juice is rich in phytochemical compounds that can help deal with dandruff. You will need 1/2 onion, blend and get the juice by straining. Apply to the scalp and leave for 1 hour before washing off. You can do this two times at least.

5. Tea tree oil

Tea tree oil contains antifungal properties. You will need 2-3 drops of tea tree oil and coconut oil. Use 3-4 times a week.

6. Probiotics

Food like greek yoghurt, dairy and milk contain lactobacillus paracases and they can reduce dandruff. It restores normal balance to your scalp. You should consume daily.

7. Coconut oil

You will need 2 tablespoons of coconut oil to be applied generously to the scalp. Leave for 1 hour and wash with a mild shampoo.
