Igbos Need The North For 2023 - Okorocha

David Ugbabe

Senator representing Imo West, Rochas Okorocha, says ethnicity should not be used as the basis for determining the next president of Nigeria.

The former governor who spoke with journalists in Abuja yesterday, said ethnicity or religion should have no basis in politics as poverty knows no tribe or religion.

In response to Northern leaders who insist that the presidency remains in the North and some who want the power to be shifted to the South in 2023, he states that vision should be put ahead of any other criteria in choosing the next leader.

While urging Nigerians to shun ethnic bias, he said,

“I believe that power must be given to the person that has the vision irrespective of where he comes from because tribe cannot put food on the table of the common man or guarantee security.”

While he acknowledged that the North had the population to determine who emerges as President, Okorocha advised that collective interest must be the focus in moving the country forward rather than sentiments.

“As you see the politics of today, everybody looks up to the North because it has the large chunk of votes to determine who becomes the President of Nigeria."

He added that "if power must shift, the support of the North is very essential.”
