Soyinka’s Award: Osinbajo Gives Reasons For His Absence

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has given reasons for his absence at the award ceremony of the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism’s Anti-Corruption Defender Award of 2019 on Monday.

Laolu Akande, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Publicity, In a letter gave reasons why the Vice President was not present at the event which was held in Abuja.

Osinbajo gave two reasons which reads, “First is that I am currently in Abu Dhabi for an international meeting under the auspices of the government of the UAE where I am the keynote speaker."

The VP hinted that his second reason for being absent was connected to the Omoyele Sowore rearrest saga.

According to him, his presence at the ceremony would be insensitive and inappropriate.

“Second, in view of the developments on Friday in the Sowore case, I think it would be insensitive and inappropriate to attend the ceremony,” he said.

However, the Vice President expressed gratitude for the recognition and award of ‘Integrity Specialty of the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism’s Anti-corruption Defender Award of 2019’.

He further pleaded with members and organisers to accept his heartfelt apologies for not making it to the event.
