The Former Governor of Akwa Ibom, Senator, and now Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Dr Godswill Akpabio, has officially pulled out of the Akwa Ibom North-East senatorial re-run election which was fixed for a later date this month.

Dr Godswill Akpabio made his intentions known in a letter addressed to the national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole. The letter was sent on the 2nd of December 2019 but made public to reporters on December 10th.

In the letter, Akpabio declared he would not step down as Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, noting that a huge responsibility had been placed on him by Mr President.

He stated that he could not abandon a critical assignment given to him by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, in 'irrelevant' pursuit of a re-run election for a senatorial position.

He, however, in accordance with Sections 33 and 35 of the Electoral Act, 2010 (as amended) submitted the name of his replacement, as he had the right to present a referral.

Akpabio also pleaded with the APC leadership to inform the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of his decision to withdraw.

“I wish to recall that I was the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District Election held on the 23rd day of February 2019.

“Upon the declaration of Christopher Ekpenyong of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the purported winner of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), I challenged same at the National and State Houses of Assembly Election Petition Tribunal, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State." Akpabio partly said.
