Barcelona have appointed former Real Betis coach, Quique Setien, as their manager following the sack of Ernesto Valverde.

The Catalalans made the announcement on Monday, just after announcing the termination of Valverde's contract with the club.

Thd 61-year-old, has been appointed by the Spanish champions on a deal that runs until 2022.

Valverde’s position at Camp Nou had long been under the microscope, but the pressure intensified after Barcelona relinquished a late lead in the Supercopa to Atletico Madrid.

It is widely reported that Barcelona were initially eager to appoint club legend, Xavi, as permanent coach to replace Valverde, but the current Al-Sadd manager stated that any return to his former club will only happen in the summer.

"Quique Setien will be the new FC Barcelona coach. The man from Cantabria in the north of Spain comes to Barca after having had spells at Racing Santander, Poli Ejido, Logrones, Lugo, Las Palmas and Betis, his previous club in the 2018/19 season," part of a statement by the club read.

"Throughout his career he has been a proponent of possession-based, attacking football that has been attractive to the fans."

Setien will be presented to the media on Tuesday at a press conference, and will take charge of his first match when Barcelona welcome tenth-placed Granada to Camp Nou on Sunday, January 19.
