Spanish La Liga leaders, Barcelona, have announced Ernesto Valverde sack from his role as the club's head coach.

The club made the decision to let the former Athletic Bilbao coach go on Tuesday after their recent poor performances, which includes the 3-2 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Super Copa semi-finals last week.

Although Valverde has won back-to-back league titles and currently has the Blaugrana sitting at the top of La Liga on goal difference, his playing style has been heavily criticized by Barcelona fans across the globe.

His failures in Europe has also not helped his reputation. An account of the Catalans suffering a humiliating 4-0 defeat against Liverpool last season to lose a healthy 3-0 advantage from the first leg, was just over a year after a similar outcome against Roma in the previous campaign.

Barca had made the decision to extend the 55-year-old's deal for an additional season in February 2019 but after the recent results and his past failings, they decided it was in the best interest of the club to let him go.

"Agreement between FC Barcelona and Ernesto Valverde to end his contract as manager of the first team. Thank you for everything, Ernesto. Best of luck in the future," an official statement from Barca read.

Valverde becomes the first Barcelona manager to be sacked in 17 years since Louis van Gaal was dismissed in 2003.

Meanwhile, former Real Betis coach, Quique Setien, has been appointed by the Spanish champions on a deal that runs until 2022.
