If you are going to list the ten most important days of your life, your wedding day will probably be among the top five.
Weddings are more than a joining of two people. They are a celebration of forever, and no one knows how to do celebrations like Nigerians. From naming ceremonies, birthdays, send-forth events and burials, Nigerians will make a party out of anything worth celebrating.
Nigerians have mastered the art of pulling over the top weddings, from the colourful attires for the traditional wedding, elegant and elaborate receptions for the white wedding/Nikah ceremony to an after-party that sometimes spills into the next day.
Are the elaborate gestures necessary? NO! But then the pressure to impress has made simple weddings look impossible to do. Nigerians can comfortably spend millions of dollars on a wedding and ask for more.
However, if the thought of getting a loan or entering debt simply because you are getting hitched causes you to experience cold sweats or a mini heart attack, here are three things you must have to successfully get married.
1. A budget
Never have a ‘no budget’ wedding! If you do, you might end up drinking garri for one month after your big day. The first thing you must do to have a hassle-free wedding is to set a budget. This budget should be based on how much the couple can afford. This will determine if you will employ the services of a planner, the number of invited guests, the venue, photographer, catering, wedding attire, decoration etc. This is the foundation for your plan.
2. A plan
Do you need a high budget, celebrity wedding planner? No. Should you make a plan? Yes. The quickest way to spoil a good wedding party is to realize you’re behind schedule (you’re late for your own wedding!), you have run out of food and drinks or you do not have enough seats for your guests. A good plan reduces stress, eliminates the need to rush, and allows you to rest, knowing it is all taken care of. If you cannot handle the stress of planning your wedding and your budget accommodates a good planner, get a planner.
3. A partner
Cliche, I know! But honestly, it is all you really need. Forget all the excesses that come with a wedding ceremony. At the end of the day, what you really want to ensure is that you are married legally to your partner.
Do not get carried away by the influential and celebrity weddings you see. Most of them do not sponsor their own weddings. The day will definitely come to an end, so what is important is that you have fun. You only get married once. At least, that is the goal.
