Nigeria international, Rita Chikwelu, has joined the ever-increasing number of African players who ply their trade in the Spanish Women's League after signing for a Madrid-based club.

The experienced 31-year-old midfielder has signed a six-month deal with Madrid CFF after moving from Swedish club, Kristianstad.

The creative midfielder, who spent the last decade in Scandinavia with Umea IK, and Kristianstad in the Swedish women's top flight, has now moved to Spain till the end of this season.

Chikwelu joined compatriot, Chidinma Okeke, who moved to the Spanish Primera side at the start of this season.

"This is a different and competitive league, as a footballer you want to test yourself around the best players," the former Akwa Starlet player told BBC Sport.

"The Spanish league is an interesting place for African players and I believe this will continue to help develop our players' game and their profile."

The two-time African Women's Cup of Nations champion, Chikwelu, also played a key role at last year's Women's World Cup as Nigeria reached the knockout stage for the first time since 1999.

Other Nigerian ladies in the Spanish top-flight include:

Asisat Oshoala (Barcelona), Osinachi Ohale (CD Tacon), Chidinma Okeke (Madrid CFF), Alice Ogebe (Real Betis Feminas), Toni Payne (Sevilla FC), Peace Efih (Sporting de Huelva).
