The League Management Company has announced that the NPFL has been suspended indefinitely in line with global protocol against coronavirus.

An announcement was made on the LMC's social media handles as well as their website on Wednesday, a few hours after the completion of the Matchday 25 games.

The statement read: "Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) has been suspended till further notice in line with global health preventive protocol against the Coronavirus Disease (COVID 19).

"In suspending remaining league matches, the League Management Company (LMC) said it would review the decision after consulting the nation’s health authorities, namely, the Federal Ministry of Health and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

"Matchday 25 fixtures were concluded on Wednesday and the LMC said the decision was to conform with the guidelines for containment of the spread of the global pandemic.”

There have been calls by Nigerians for the government to order the suspension of the league and other gatherings for the time being, as the world continues to battle the novel pandemic.

Recall that earlier this week, President Muhammadu Buhari approved the postponement of the 2020 National Sports Festival, Edo 2020, after a meeting with the Minister of Youths and Sports.

The festival, which would have commenced on 22nd of March, was postponed as a precautionary move against coronavirus.

At the time of this report, Nigeria had a total of 8 confirmed cases of the virus which started from Wuhan, China.
