Enyimba football club players and officials were attacked by armed robbers on their road trip back to Aba after an away game in the NPFL.

The attack occurred along Okigwe-Umuahia Expressway in Imo State while the team was making the trip back to their base after a victorious outing on Wednesday against Adamawa United.

According to reports, only one player sustained injuries during the incident which was said to have occurred around 7:45 pm on Thursday.

The chairman of the team, Felix Anyansi-Agwu, who confirmed the attack during a phone chat with ‘The Punch’, said the team had arrived Aba.

“I was not there, but from what I was briefed, they ran into an attack around Okigwe and robbers smashed their bus glass and it scattered and injured a player inside the bus. They are safe, they are back in Aba," Anyansi-Agwu said.

“The person that the glass affected had some bruises and was bleeding.

“They left from Jos this morning, I think the road was rough and they got to Okigwe late. The attack happened around 7:45 pm."

The People's Elephant defeated their hosts by 2-0 to pick up all three points in Gombe (where Adamawa is currently playing its home games) in a Matchday 25 game.

The win helped Enyimba players, who have five games in hand, to close the gap on the teams above them as they look to defend the title they won last year.

Recall that in January 2016, Enyimba suffered the same fate in Okene, Kogi State, while travelling for the Super Four in Kaduna.
