A recent update by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has revealed that 226 new confirmed COVID-19 cases have been recorded in the country.

The new cases, according to the update, were recorded in 16 states, including Lagos (131), Ogun (25), Plateau (15), Edo (11), Kaduna (7), Oyo (6), FCT (5), Adamawa (5), Jigawa (4), Ebonyi (4), Borno (4), Nasarawa (3), Bauchi (2), Gombe (2), Enugu (1), and Bayelsa (1), thus bringing the total number of cases to 6,401.

The first case of the novel coronavirus was recorded in Nigeria on February 27, 2020, when an Italian who returned to the country from Milan, Italy, tested positive for the virus.

There has since been a huge spike in the number of cases across the country in spite of a 14-day lockdown, which was extended by additional 14 days, in an effort to contain the spread of the virus.

Monday, May 4, 2020, will always be remembered as the day the lockdown was partially lifted, and many feared for the safety and health of those who were returning to work.

Some preventive measures against the virus include practising social distancing, cultivating proper hygiene habits and wearing face masks.
