Day 19: My Quarantine Diary

Read the daily, non-fictional tales of a young, unmarried Nigerian woman who lives in Lagos at this time.

Ikechukwu and I had started talking over the phone for longer hours, longer than the first few days, long into the night and the early hours of the next morning.

We had the most fun and exciting conversations. He was intelligent, with a great sense of humour, and I would laugh out loud at his jokes late at night. On those nights, I was thankful that I did not have a roommate.

During the day, we would send random messages to each other with the cutest smileys.

In the evening, we would take long walks down our street and to the next street, sometimes to the third and fourth, almost going as far as the estate's main gate.

There were times when he walked his dogs - well, dogs because he had one and I gave him the other - Olumide's terrier. Since I had no way to care for it, I had to give it out. Ike was quick to remind me, though, that the dog was still mine.

"It's still yours. You know that, right? I am only helping you look after it," he said to me a day after I had given it to him.

"Yes!" I said, looking up at him to catch that familiar dimpled smile on his face. "What would you name it?"

"What would you name it?" he echoed.

"I asked first," I said.

"I asked next." He smiled again.

After going back and forth for a while, we decided we were going to name the dog Princess. She - yes, she - was such a dainty little thing and we thought the name was befitting.

It was not long afterwards that Ikechukwu decided that it was time to take our relationship to the next level.

The day he asked me to be his girlfriend seemed like any other day. He did not make it obvious that he had something planned - the details of which I will share some other time (although a part of me could tell that he was up to something).

Till then, this pretty head has to rest.

With all my love,

Anike.
