Lagos has recorded 142 new confirmed COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number of cases in the state to 7,461, with 107 deaths, 6,052 on admission, and 1,302 people now discharged.

The state is the most impacted in the country, followed by the FCT and Kano with 1,324 and 1,158 cases respectively.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, yesterday, June 16, suspended the reopening of worship centres until further notice.

Recall that the governor had earlier set June 19 and June 21 as the dates for the reopening of mosques and the resumption of church services. He, however, maintained that the plan had been put on hold in a bid to keep Lagos residents safe.

“So, let me say this again: we are now hereby suspending, with immediate effect, the plan to re-open religious houses and places of worship in Lagos State, until further notice," Sanwo-Olu said at the fifteenth update on coronavirus management in the state.

“We will continue to monitor the situation closely, and continue to base our decision-making on data modelling; as well as on the responsibility we have to act in a manner that ensures the protection of all of you the people of Lagos State.”

“Let me make this clear, that we are now fully in the phase of personal responsibility, regarding this pandemic. This means that, while the Government maintains its responsibility to take protective decisions for the common good, what will ultimately save us all and defeat this virus are the sensible personal decisions that we take on a daily basis.

“Decisions to use masks anytime you are out of your house, to avoid non-essential travel, to stay at home when we don’t have any business being outside, to wash or sanitize our hands regularly – these are the simple but necessary steps that will save and protect us all.”

Meanwhile, the country has recorded a total of 17,148 confirmed COVID-19 cases, with 455 deaths and 5,623 recoveries.

According to the official figures published by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), 490 new confirmed cases were recorded in 16 states late yesterday, including Lagos (142), FCT (60), Bayelsa (54), Rivers (39), Delta (37), Oyo (30), Kaduna (26), Imo (23), Enugu (19), Kwara (17), Gombe (11), Ondo (10), Bauchi (8), Ogun (7), Borno (6) and Benue (1).
