Low self-esteem is all too common in relationships. Here, we take a look at ways to help your partner who may be struggling with low self-esteem.
Helping your partner who is struggling with low self-esteem is no walk in the park, but it is not impossible. You can help your partner deal with it in these ways below.
1. Resist the urge to constantly make corrections or suggestions
Constantly making suggestions about how your partner should do things or correcting them on things they do can negatively affect their self-esteem. They might begin to feel like they are not doing anything right or you are never satisfied with anything they do. So, rather than complaining or making suggestions, you should give them the support they need and encourage them or wait till they seek your opinion.
2. Do not call them out in public
If your partner does something wrong or something that you are not particularly comfortable with, wait till you are home and alone, then have a conversation about it. Avoid calling them out in public, in front of friends and family or on social media. This might make them embarrassed and will only make them lose confidence in themselves.
3. Refrain from the ill-timed and cruel jokes
Your ill-timed and cruel jokes about your partner can make them deeply hurt and leave them feeling sad or angry. Something you consider a joke and that seems funny to you, might not be funny to them, especially if the intent of the joke is to poke fun at them. Next time you have the urge to make a cruel joke, say something nice to your partner instead.
4. Stop being self-centered
Being selfish can also affect the self-esteem of your partner. If you always have excuses for not doing things for them, repeatedly saying no to their wishes or desires, and going back on your promises to help out with something, they begin to feel like a burden and you ultimately damage their self-esteem. Show your partner that you care by helping out when you can. They would appreciate it.
5. Appreciate your partner
A person who struggles with a low body image will not enjoy a joke about their body. They wouldn't appreciate you calling them out on their choice of outfits after they put much thought and planning into it. Paying your partner compliments, especially when you notice the effort they put into choosing an outfit, working out and staying fit, or wearing makeup, will help boost their confidence.
