Are You Lonely? These 5 Subtle Signs Suggest That You Are

These are classic signs that you are lonely, even if you do not realise it or are reluctant to admit it.

Even the best of us are plagued by feelings of loneliness and isolation. You might be lonely in spite of the fact that you are surrounded by people or you are working hard at a great, fulfilling career and have so much going for you. Because loneliness is a state of mind and feeling, it does not necessarily mean that you are alone. But when you are lonely, you will certainly feel alone.

Moving to a new location, divorce, death of a loved one, and isolation are some things that could cause loneliness. Some people may be lonely and have no idea because they do not recognise the signs. Here, find five signs of loneliness that you should not ignore, although they seem too subtle to be noticed.

1. You are constantly shopping

When you find yourself constantly shopping for material possessions, especially when they are not urgent and you have no use for them, you are probably battling with the feeling of loneliness. Your sudden obsession with acquiring more material possessions than you already have may be a sign that you need companionship. It is motivated by your longing for friendship, a relationship and intimacy.

2. You are binge-watching TV shows

If you always find yourself binge-watching TV shows, you are probably lonely. This is your mechanism for controlling the negative thoughts that come with loneliness. TV is the perfect distraction from your current situation and it would take a lot to be pulled away from it. As a result, you spend hours on end watching your favourite show. Studies show that the lonelier you are the more likely you are to binge-watch TV shows.

3. You are always tired

Loneliness makes you tired because you never get the right amount of sleep. Since you have negative thoughts that keep you awake at night, you cannot catch a good sleep and wake up tired in the morning. You will probably remain tired the rest of the day, too. Anxiety and depression that could result from loneliness can also deprive you of your peace of mind and make you tired.

4. You are easily stressed

Loneliness raises your stress hormones and makes you stressed out about nearly everything, especially the little things. If you catch yourself getting worked up over those little things that you ignored in the past or that can be easily ignored, you are probably struggling with loneliness. Loneliness can create a problem where there is none or exaggerate a small hurdle.

5. You spend all your time on social media

Spending all your time on social media suggests that you are lonely. If you spend more time with strangers you meet online than with people you actually know, you probably do not have as many friends as you thought you had and you are all alone. This, of course, has adverse effects on your physical and mental well-being and on your ability to build genuine friendships.
