Gift stared at the lawyer and the older woman; every reasonable thought fleeing from her. The older woman was the first to speak.

“Are you going to keep me out here all day?” She asked pompously.

Gathering herself together, Gift stepped aside to allow them into the small apartment. As they entered, the older woman noted the framed wedding photos on the wall and the neat but small living room. She sat down on the sofa without invitation and looked up at Gift coldly.

“Where is Kingsley?” Her tone wasn’t comforting.

“He’s gone to the mechanic.” Gift replied.

The woman gave her a slow once-over then pinned her with an inquiring stare.

“Is he well?” The older woman continued her questioning, which seemed like a criminal interrogation.  Gift felt irritation rising at the woman’s tone.

“My husband is well. He’s picking up the pieces of his life and we are trying to build a future together so our baby can have a good life.” She told her in an almost rude tone.

She gladly noted that the older woman’s eyes widened at the mention of a grandchild and suppressed a smile as the woman looked at her stomach. The lawyer and Kingsley’s mother exchanged looks but the lawyer remained silent while the older woman contemplated her next words.

“You are pregnant? Why didn’t you tell me? In fact, why didn’t you inform me that you had changed your mind and decided to stay with my son, even after your father had made it clear that he was coming to get you? What did you plan to achieve with all these secrecy?” Gift was stunned at the unexpected twist the conversation was taking. She sighed and knelt before the older woman.

“Mummy, don’t be angry with me. I was only doing what I felt would please my husband. Our new marriage already had its many problems and the minute I began to see changes in him, I didn’t want to ruin it.” She explained, but Kingsley’s mother would have none of it.

“So telling me that you’re expecting my first grandchild would ruin your marriage? A marriage I arranged for my own son?” The woman was being difficult and Gift didn’t know what to do or how to remedy the situation.

Mercifully, the door opened and Kingsley walked in. He stopped in shock, took in the situation and let his fury show.

“Gift, get up immediately and come over here.” He grated through clenched teeth.

Gift looked from her mother in-law to her husband then got up and slowly walked towards him. As soon as she got to his side, he grabbed her possessively, his eyes flashing dangerously.

“I don’t know why you are here but please, leave my house!” Kingsley ordered.

His mother got up and smiled broadly at him, spreading her arms out for a hug.

“My son… Look at you. I am so proud of the man you’ve become. Come here let me hold you…” The older woman cajoled.

“Do not speak to me like I’m a retard mother. I’m a fully grown married man. Please respect that and leave my house. You’re not welcome here!” Came his retort.

“Kingsley… I’m not the enemy. Whatever I did to you was for the best. It’s called ‘Tough Love’ and it was meant to make you better” his mother explained, hurt at his anger towards her.

“Good. Call it whatever… but you and your tough love need to leave my house or it will get nasty. I am not your son remember? You and I have no ties. Don’t make me physically throw you out.” He warned her.

“Kingsley, take it easy… Your mother is not here to fight…” The lawyer chipped in. Kingsley turned his anger towards the man.

“You shut up! You have a nerve speaking to me after calling me a dimwit. Now, I don’t know what your mission is and I really couldn’t be bothered by it. Just get the fuck out of my house, both of you!” His voice was rising and Gift’s sadness deepened .

“Honey, please…” Gift tried to speak but he cut her off.

“Gift don’t! I was at my lowest. I was a menace, I agree, but I had reached rock bottom and what did this woman that calls herself my mother do? She cut me off! She threw me out and disowned me.” He spat out.

“I did what I had to do to get you to see reason!” His mother screamed at him in frustration.

“You called me a curse! You called me an embarrassment and a useless child. You accused me of wanting to kill you to inherit your money. Now, you and your money should leave the lowly abode of a cursed child! Leave now!!!!!” He screamed back at her and was pleased that his mother and her lawyer took a few steps back.

His mother clutched at her chest in horror, her mouth moving but no words came out. Her lawyer tapped her arm and when she turned to him in confusion, he gave her a reassuring smile.

“Let’s go. We’ll see him when he has calmed down. Staying will only aggravate him.” The lawyer explained.

“I’m going in now, and when I get out, you better be gone or else…” Kingsley left the words hanging as he marched into the small bedroom, slamming the door shut behind him.

As they left, her mother in-law gave Gift a look filled with anger and disappointment. Gift had a weird feeling that the older woman blamed her for it all. The thought depressed her immensely.

A week after his mother showed up at their house, Gift came up with a plan. Seeing as her mother in-law had somehow fashioned a way to pin the blame on her, Gift decided she had to do something to remedy the situation. Kingsley was still adamant about not making peace and the situation was becoming unbearable, so Gift employed emotional blackmail. Kingsley returned home from work to find his wife crying. Thinking his mother had shown up again in his absence, he began to threaten fire and brimstone.

“She didn’t come here…” Gift explained through tears.

“Then why are you crying?” He asked her in worry.

“I’m crying because the doctor said my B.P is high and if it goes any higher, I might lose the baby. I don’t want to lose the baby.” Gift sobbed some more for effect.

Kingsley pulled her in his arms and hugged her, kissing her cheek and trying to calm her down.

“Crying will only worsen your already high blood pressure. Don’t do this to yourself. Think about me… Think about the baby… Think about your health…” He said softly.

“How can I not cry? I’m in the middle of a storm. My baby is going to be born into a family fight and whether you like it or not, some persons will put the blame on me.” The frustration was heavy in her voice.

“No one can blame you for the fight between my mother and I. You had nothing to do with it…” He told her firmly.

“They will blame me for not trying to keep the peace. Maybe if I lose the baby, it will be for the best. Then maybe you and your mother will make peace and then I can return to my parents.” She sobbed aloud.

Kingsley grabbed her arms and shook her lightly.

“Don’t you ever say that again! You are not going to lose the baby. You are NOT going back to your parent’s house. You are my wife GIFT and you will be the mother of my kids, you hear me? YOU HEAR ME????” His voice was laced with fear.

Gift held him tight and cried into his shirt. Kingsley’s heart beat frantically as he pondered his next course of action.

“If my wife loses this pregnancy, you will not only have a dead grandchild, but also a dead son.” He told his mother coldly as he stared at her in her living room the next day.

“God forbid!” His mother said immediately.

“We were doing fine on our own, without you and your constant need to dictate to me or rule my life. I have a job. We have our small apartment. We were happy in our cozy World. And then you show up and ruin it… Like you always ruin everything else in my life. I swear, if Gift loses this baby, you will bury me!” He said in finality.

His mother had already started crying.

“Kingsley, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean for all this to happen this way. I just didn’t want to see my only child turn into a nonentity. I was tired and frustrated. I did what I thought was best, to salvage the situation.” His mother explained through tears.

“Gift left me… She left with her father and uncle. But she came back. She came back despite everything I did to her. I insulted her. I flaunted Ethel in her face. I was fucking my girlfriend in my matrimonial home, yet she stayed!!! She was tired, miserable, frustrated… But she stayed with a stranger she barely knew. She mopped up my vomit. She washed my clothes. I would have squandered the money you gave me but she helped me manage it. She has been my LIGHT and the one good thing you brought into my life BUT, if she loses this baby, you have lost me!” He couldn’t help the tears that filled his eyes.

He knew that Gift had only come to ensure that he didn’t die from the mauling that her folks had given him but he reasoned that at least she had a conscience. Some other people wouldn’t care. He glared at his mother who was now on her knees, weeping profusely and pleading.

“She will not lose the pregnancy in Jesus’ name. She will be fine. I will make sure of that. My son please… Please forgive me. Do not shut me out of the life of my grandchild, abeg you.”

Kingsley let out a deep sigh. Looking at his mother weeping so pathetically broke something inside him. He knelt before her and pulled her in his arms and let the older woman cry it all out.

Gift smiled as her husband walked towards her, naked and throbbing. She rubbed her small mound, glad that the unease of the first trimester was gone and her second trimester was relatively stressless. As he joined her on the bed, she marveled at his need for her. She’d thought that her growing belly would be a turn off but it hadn’t. Since arriving England – on the insistence of her mother in-law – Kingsley had made love to her almost every day. His sex drive still awed her. He pulled her close and kissed her long and deep.

“Are you cold? Your skin feels cold.” He said with worry.

“I’m fine…” She replied and kissed him. But he wasn’t convinced. He got out of bed and turned up the heating rings, pulling it closer to the bed. She chuckled at his worry and hugged him tight when he returned to bed.

“You fuss about me too much honey. I am fine. The baby is fine and my blood pressure has stabilized. Relax will you?” She said.

“You are my life… I have to fuss when my life is uncomfortable.” He said and kissed her back.

She smiled and turned on her side till her butt pressed against his thick shaft. She was soft and her skin was silky smooth as he ran his hands all over her. With a groan, he lifted up her left leg and pushed his dick towards her opening. She was wet and ready for him. He pushed into her slowly, careful not to hurt her but needing her fiercely. They made love… Nice and slow… Both luxuriating in the beauty of their growing love. Every sigh, touch, kiss was a response to the immense pleasure they both gave each other and when finally, they peaked, he held her tight, mindful of her pregnant bulge yet needing to hold her in a possessive embrace.

“My mom is flying in in two days. She will be here with you till I return.” He told her after their breathing had eased back to normal.

“I know. She called me. She’s really sweet you know… If you ignore her domineering attitude.” Gift said with a smile.

“Yeah she’s sweet… But I’m never going to tell her that.” He said and they both laughed.

As they snuggled under the duvet, prepared to let sleep in, Gift said a silent prayer of thanks. Her husband was an unwilling groom. He had been difficult and spoilt. Things had gone awfully wrong with him. He had almost lost his life. But, she had decided to follow a path that was scheming, yet right and that decision had not only earned her the love of a man she thought she would never have; it also brought with it a baby, comfort and fortune. Her child was going to be born in the U.K and she could afford to get whatever she craved. Her beginning was rough and hopeless but her today, tomorrow and future was shaping out to be rosy. That was a gift to Gift herself and she couldn’t thank God enough. She sighed, snuggled even closer to Kingsley’s warm naked body and closed her eyes.
