Men: 5 signs that signal mid-life crises

Mfonobong Akpan

You know that point in your life when you think you haven’t done enough and the clock is ticking…? That’s a mid-life crises! A mid-life crisis is experienced by some people as they realise they have reached a midpoint in their lifespan and experience conflicts or dissatisfaction within themselves because of unrealised goals, self-perceptions or physical changes as a result of aging or health issues.

Sometimes, a crisis can be triggered by transitions such as andropause or menopause. When experiencing a mid-life crisis, people may reassess their achievements in terms of their dreams. The result may be a desire to make significant changes in areas such as career, work-life balance, marriage, romantic relationships, finances, or physical appearance.

Certainly not everyone of a certain age runs out and has an affair or purchases a new sports car or goes on a shopping spree, but there are some common signs that can signal the arrival of a midlife crisis in men.

You’ve hit your 40th birthday – Most often you see men struggling with these mid-life questions in their 40s and early 50s.

You’re uneasy about major elements in your life – This may include not being satisfied with your career, your marriage, or your health, and feeling the urge to take action to make them better.

You feel that your time for taking a new direction is running short – Many men are more concerned about their appearance, their stamina not being top notch, becoming a grandfather, or friends death. They think “I might just go soon, I haven’t accomplished much”

You’re making unusual choices – Men may go through a “teenage-like rebellion” at this point in their lives. They may tend to drink more, having an affair, leaving your family, and feeling your life no longer fits you.

You feel more desire for fun and excitement – Because you feel you haven’t actually lived and enjoyed life to the fullest. So you want to do everything at once.

Here’s what you should remember though, your feelings are just feelings, don’t go doing something rash just because you feel the need to. It will pass over time. Be thankful for the parts of your life that make you happy, especially family. Men make plenty of successful changes in their 40s and beyond. Just make sure your new goals are practical and within your grasp.
