When a man is faced with seemingly overpowering pressures, he has just two options; cave in and resign to fate, or rise, look inwards, do the math and gear up to face challenges head on! Now, that’s the difference between greatness and average, just one word –“Optimism”; highly inestimable yet easily underestimated by man.
What’s it about the unfamiliar that endears man? That yearning to explore unknown depths, the pure adrenaline and enveloping excitement which keeps driving you further and further till you satiate that intense desire for more?
‘The Martian’, a science fiction film portrays the exciting yet scary life of astronauts and the different challenges they encounter in their quest to unfold the mysteries which lie beyond planet earth.
Mark Watney (Matt Damon) together with his crewmates: Jeff Daniels, Jessica Chastain, Kate Mara, Kristen Wiig (Mission’s Commander), embark on a mission to the ‘Red Planet’ – Mars, but somehow things go awry and he’s presumed dead. So, Mr. Positivity is abandoned all alone in space, with barely enough food to last him till help comes calling (If at all it ever will, that is ).
Mind juggling questions then arise- How long can a man stay without interaction with his fellow man? Will Mark succeed in implementing acquired theoretical survival techniques? Will he break under the undeniably bleak circumstance or will he man up to the task and forge ahead for survival?
From a distance, ‘The Martian’ tells a predictable story of a stranded astronaut and his quest for survival, but on closer inspection, we see: bravery, determination and resourcefulness – the ability of an individual to determine his own fate and this underlying message no doubt challenges us as individuals to dare to succeed, even in the most overwhelming of situations.
‘The Martian’ s plot is pretty straight forward and perceived as rather serious; no love entanglements coming in between the mix to perhaps bring subtlety, so it tends to have specific audience, (space enthusiasts).
