On this day February 11 on this day in history, 2012, the world bid farewell to music icon Whitney Houston. The singer and actress, died at the Beverly Hilton hotel on the eve of the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles. Houston was found “underwater and unconscious” in the bathtub of her hotel room. Prescription drugs were found nearby, and bottles of champagne and beer were in the adjacent room.

1971- Whitney Young Jr, National Urban League director, drowns in Nigeria. Civil rights leader Whitney Young Jr., head of the National Urban League, was at the forefront of racial integration and African-American economic empowerment. Young died on March 11, 1971, at the age of 49, while attending a conference in Lagos, Nigeria. He is believed to have drowned while swimming at a beach.
