7 Tips To Help Manage Your Emotions

In the course of the human life,  it is inevitable that we both feel pleasant and unpleasant emotions from time to time. We would loss loved ones, family and friends would upset and disappoint us, and the challenges of life will make us angry and frustrated. But what matters is how we manage these emotions as we go along life’s road in order to maintain our mental health and stay emotionally balanced.

Researchers have warned over time that perpetual emotional suppression is nothing benign but can lead to potentially serious mental and physical health problems and even premature death.

The following steps should help those who want to express their feelings in a more effective way, so you don’t keep these emotions bottled up and then blow up, dynamite style.

Identify the emotions
To manage emotions effectively you first need to be able to accurately identify what you’re feeling and why.

Accept your emotions and express your emotions
As soon as you get sad, angry or anxious, don’t bury your head in the sand and pretend you’re fine. Express your emotions. Locking it in only makes it a time bomb waiting to explode.

Express yourself through a creative medium
This is very helpful. Channel all the pent up anger, sadness, happiness, and frustration you’ve been feeling into a creative medium. Don’t drown your sorrows sulking, snapping at everyone, try more productive activities: take up music, singing, acting, drawing, writing, knitting, sports, running or other paths of expression that require emotion to utilise. This would help reduce intensity and then gain mental clarity.

Talk to someone you trust
There are a number of people in your life whom you could talk with in order to get things off your chest. Friends and family are the first group of individuals that you should try and communicate with. If not, you can always contact a professional counselor, who would be more than willing to help you with your emotional troubles.

Stop and think before you act
Sometimes when we’re feeling a strong emotion we tend to act impulsively, without thinking about the consequences or the best way to approach the situation. It is guaranteed that you’ll say or do something you’ll later regret. Learn how to identify the signs that you may be getting to that place. That way, next time you notice these signs, it can be a cue to start thinking more consciously about these feelings and your response.

Remember to listen
When you’re expressing strong emotions, it’s easy to start talking over the other person. You don’t hear the other person anymore. Try to pause by taking deep breaths, then listen.

Replace negative thoughts with positive
Whenever you are confronted with an emotion which is making you feel or think something bad, force it out of your mind and replace it with a pleasant thought. Remember who or what makes you happy, also keeping in mind it’s just for that moment.
