#AskHappenings: Please Help! Can You Get Pregnant Even If You’re A Virgin?

Mfonobong Akpan

Dear Happenings,

I’m totally freaked out and I need help. I’m a virgin, but I’m scared that I might be pregnant. My boyfriend and I were fooling around with no clothes on, but didn’t go all the way, but now my period is late. I’ve been freaking out ever since. Could I be pregnant, even when we didn’t have sex?

Freaked out girl.

Dear Freaked out girl,

Yes, a virgin can become pregnant.

Such pregnancies are probably rare but not impossible – I think every young girl should know about this. I know how scary this thought is for you right now, and I totally understand where you’re coming from.

The truth is that you can actually get pregnant even if you’ve never had sex with a guy. If the sperm is strong enough, it can swim up the vagina and impregnate you. However, this is rare. Your chances of getting pregnant when you’ve never had sex are much, much lower than they would be if you had penetrative sex. But that doesn’t change the fact that the chance is still there.

Any sexual experimentation or byplay that permits the sperm cell to reach an ovum permits nature to take its course. The hymen has a small opening in it to allow menstrual blood to pass through, and sperm cells don’t need that much passage way, so if it’s the case that he got semen around your vaginal area, it’s possible for pregnancy to happen – even precum contains some amount of semen.

There are so many reasons your period could be late, but you shouldn’t take chances. Try to relax and take the next step of  buying a pregnancy test kit or seeing a doctor so you can really know what’s going on, so you know what next to do.

Be extra cautious when you are messing around with your  boyfriend. And when you do decide to have sex, make sure you use a condom the entire time so that you’re both protected. I hope this helps you!
