Renowed Senior Advocate of Nigeria, author and philanthropist Chief Abdul-Ganiyu “Gani” Oyesola Fawehinmi was the son of Saheed and Munirat Fawehinmi of Ondo.

He was born 22 April 1938, to an influential family, but after his father’s death Fawehinmi who was studying law at the University of London had to work in order to finance the remainder of his education.

Known as Nigeria’s foremost activist, he had his early education at Ansar-Ud-Deen Primary School, Iyemaja – Ondo from 1947 to 1953, his secondary school education at Victory College Ikare from 1954 to 1958. While in college, he was popularly known as “Nation” because of his passionate interest in national, legal and political affairs.

He began practicing law in Lagos in 1965 and quickly became known as “the people’s lawyer,” taking on such cases as the mysterious killing in 1986 of a newspaper editor (for which Fawehinmi blamed the military junta in power at that time) and often representing those who could not afford to pay for his services.

He  worked briefly as a law clerk in the High Court of Lagos until 1961. Gani enrolled at the Holborn College of Law- University of London to read law in 1961.

He devoted his life to fighting for the rights of the Nigerian people; as a tireless advocate for justice, he made many enemies among Nigeria’s military and civilian regimes.

Despite the risk of assassination, he cofounded (1994) the National Conscience Party and continued to take on powerful opponents until his death. Fawehinmi’s activism extended to philanthropy, including the granting of scholarships to impoverished Nigerian youths. He also published several books and founded (1986) the Nigerian Weekly Law Reports. Fawehinmi was awarded the Bruno Kreisky Prize in 1993 in honour of his work in advancing human rights. In 2001 he was made a senior advocate of Nigeria, the country’s highest title in the legal profession.

Gani Fawehinmi died 5 September 2009 aged 71.

Famous Nigerian professional footballer John Michael Nchekwube Obinna popularly known as John Obi Mikel or Mikel John Obi plays as a midfielder for English club Chelsea and the Nigeria national team

Born  April 22, 1987. He is the son of Michael Obi, a transporter of the Igbo ethnic group in Nigeria. The name Mikel was adopted by John Micheal Nchekwube Obi, when during the preparations for the 2003 FIFA Under-17 World Championships, the Nigerian Football Association mistakenly submitted “Michael” as “Mikel” for the tournament in Finland. He, from that moment, decided to keep the new name, saying that it had a special ring to it.

Mikel Obi started his football career when he was twelve years old and was identified and selected from among 3000 talented young footballers to play in Pepsi Football Academy.

He later joined the Nigerian National team, playing at the FIFA Under-17 World Championships, a tournament that held in Finland

Mikel played with the Nigeria’ s under-20 football team during the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship and won the Silver Ball as the second-best player in the tournament (behind Lionel Messi) as the Africans finished runner-up to Argentina.

On August 17, 2005 Mikel made his debut for the Nigeria senior team after he came in as a second-half substitute in a match between Nigeria and Libya, a game Nigeria eventually won.
Mikel also made his FIFA World Cup debut during the 2014 tournament in Brazil, after the game, he was named the man of the match.

He turns 29 today!

Award winning Nigerian actress,producer and script writer Omoni Oboli in 2010 won the award for Best Actress – Narrative Feature at the Los Angeles Movie Awards, and the award for Best Actress at the Harlem International Film Festival. She was nominated for the Best Actress in a Leading Role award at the 2011 Africa Movie Academy Awards. In 2014, Omoni won Big Screen Actress of the Year award, at the 2014 ELOY Awards, for her movie Being Mrs Elliot.

The actress born in Benin City in Edo State, Nigeria on April 22, 1978 hails from Delta State.
She had her secondary school education at Delta Steel Company Technical High School (DSC THS) and studied Foreign Languages at the University of Benin majoring in French. In 1996, while still at the university, she shot her first film.

She got married to her husband Nnamdi Oboli on October 28, 2000.Ahe has featured in a couple of movies including: Kunle Afolayan’s award winning movie – The Figurine, Bent Arrows, Being Mrs Elliot, Feathered Dreams and others.

Omoni Oboli turns 38 today.
