Whether behind the cameras dishing out mega tracks from his Silver Point music studio or in front of the mic mesmerizing hearts with impressive vocals and contagious lyrics, the late Babatunde Okungbowa aka OJB Jezreel/ Jigga even way back in the 90’s when contemporary music was just starting to gain foothold in Nigeria, proudly stood tall as one of Nigeria’s iconic producers/ singer. He was regarded as one of the pioneers of contemporary pop music in Nigeria.

As we say farewell to the late OJB, who died in the early hours of today June 14 following a kidney relapse,  we take a look at some facts about the late producer:

  • He hailed from Agbor, Delta state.
  • He lived in Surulere area of Lagos State
  • Although the late producer couldn’t say exactly how he dabbled into the production, he believed it started sometime in 1986.
  • OJB is credited for working with a range of high profile (then upcoming) celebs: Ruggedman – (‘Ehen’), Baba Dee (Governor’s Daughter), Daddy Showkey’s sophomore album, D’banj (‘Kiss Me Quick’), Durella (Wiskolo Wiska), Jazzman Olofin, Nomoreloss, KC Presh, X-Appeal, Harmony, Plantashun Boiz, 2face’s first two solo albums ‘Face 2 Face’,  ‘Grass To Grace’ and his biggest yet; ‘African Queen‘ which sold a staggering 10million copies in Nigeria alone and 8million copies internationally, this gave him further acclaim.
  • OJB was legally married to three wives and eight kids; First wife Mabel had three children

The second June ‘Ama’ Okungbowa a graduate of the University of Lagos/ buzzing singer making waves in 2003 also had three kids.

While Korede Okungbowa, a graduate of Olabisi Onabanjo University/ Ruggedman’s dancer had 2 kids for OJB. They were all involved in the entertainment world.

  • The veteran producer had a major breakdown following kidney disease in 2013, however he had a successful kidney transplant within the same year in India after his first wife Mabel donated a kidney to him.
  • In May, 2015, rumors of OJB having a kidney relapse hit the internet, however he denied this claim, stating he was healthy.
  •  Today June 14, the singer died in the early hours of the day, following a kidney relapse
  • His body has been deposited in the morgue at Isolo General Hospital.
  • He died one month to his 50th birthday.
